Stimulus: A Shot in the Arm for Health Care

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act offered $2 billion to more than 7,000 community health centers around the country. In Texas, the law has provided about $78 million to 65 community health centers — with the prospect of more to come.

The $78 million, which must be spent over two years, is a shot in the arm. By comparison, in 2007, the total revenue for all community health centers in Texas was $391 million, including $99 million from the federal government. The Texas centers are hiring additional staff, renovating and expanding clinics or opening new facilities with the additional money. Read more

Texas Awarded $45.6 Million in Stimulus Funds for Energy Efficiency Programs

Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced that more than $354 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is being awarded to 22 states, including Texas, to support energy efficiency and conservation activities.

Under the Department of Energy's Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, these states will implement programs that lower energy use, reduce carbon pollution and create green jobs locally.

Texas will use its more than $45.6 million EECBG funds to reduce fossil fuel emissions, decrease overall energy use and improve energy efficiency statewide. These funds will be administered by the Texas State Energy Commission Office (SECO), which will redistribute... Read more

Texas Awarded More Than $2.6 Million in Recovery Act Funds to Train Health Professionals

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today announced awards totaling $33 million to expand the training of healthcare professionals. The funds are part of the $500 million allotted to HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration to address workforce shortages under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

In Texas, 15 colleges and universities received $2 million in ARRA funding for scholarships for disadvantaged students. In addition, the Texas A&M University Health Science Center Research Foundation and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston received almost $435,000 in Center of Excellence grants, while the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston was awarded $215,000 to fund dental public health residencies.
