Governor Announces Application for $5 Million Federal Recovery Act Grant to Train, Place Healthcare Workers

Governor Edward G. Rendell today said the commonwealth’s application for a $5 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant will help provide training and placement services for approximately 1,430 Pennsylvanians seeking careers in healthcare. “Healthcare is among our most important industries and it is adding jobs – even during this recession,” Governor Rendell said. Pennsylvania Awarded Recovery Act Funds to Train Health Professionals

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius today announced awards totaling $33 million to expand the training of healthcare professionals. The funds are part of the $500 million allotted to HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration to address workforce shortages under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

In Pennsylvania, 13 colleges and universities received more than $952,000 in ARRA funding for scholarships for disadvantaged students. In addition, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pittsburgh received a total of nearly $64,000 to fund public health traineeships.

Recovery Grants to Assist Counties, Prosecutors Within Juvenile Justice System

The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency approved the award of approximately $1.8 million in federal funds to help improve county juvenile court operations and provide training for juvenile system prosecutors.

Of that amount, $1.6 million is from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act under the Justice Assistance Grant program for Juvenile Prosecution and Defense Capacity. The funds will be used by nine counties to hire or retain attorneys to assist in juvenile case processing and to reduce caseload size. These federal funds can be used to hire or retain public defenders and assistant district attorneys within the county’s juvenile court operations.
