Hudson Valley Community College Receives Recovery Act Funds to Support Solar Energy Training

Gov. David A. Paterson today announced that Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) has received $3.5 million to develop a new solar photovoltaic training facility that will provide critical support for the governor's efforts to develop the clean energy workforce. The award was made by the US Department of Energy with funds available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

HVCC will establish a network of instructors that will earn Institute of Sustainable Power certification and develop a solar photovoltaic training facility that will support future instructor training in the region. This program, to be located at Hudson Valley’s TEC-SMART building at the Saratoga Technology + Energy Park® (STEP®) in Malta, addresses the need for local, high-quality solar installers by offering expert instruction at a first-class training facility.

New York Research Institutions Awarded More Than $600 Million in Stimulus Grants

Gov. David A. Paterson announced that New York state universities, medical facilities, businesses and research institutions have been awarded 1,164 research grants worth more than $600 million through competitive stimulus funds available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The federal agencies providing these funds include the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy.

The total stimulus research grants of $605.5 million, as of September 17, include: 818 NIH awards totaling more than $223 million, or 9.2 percent of the total, ranking New York third among the states; 324 awards from the National Science Foundation totaling almost $138 million, or 5.6 percent of the total, ranking New York fourth in the nation; and $243 million from the Department of Energy and $925,000 from the Department of Agriculture.

Governor Announces Stimulus Project Savings

Gov. David A. Paterson announced that the costs of projects financed with economic recovery funds have been lower than estimated. The lower costs have allowed the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to make more road and bridge improvements with the American Recovery and Reinvestment (ARRA) grants obligated to New York.

Infrastructure improvement projects worth an estimated $469 million have been put out for contractor bids. Yet those bids came in lower than estimated at $402 million. NYSDOT has seen cost savings of nearly 15 percent on the ARRA projects, allowing addition projects to be funded.
