Michigan Communities, Organizations Awarded $8.4 Million in Recovery Act Grants for Fire Stations, Port Security

Nine Michigan communities and organizations have been awarded more than $8.4 million in Recovery Act grants to construct fire stations and enhance port security. The grants, administered by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), are designed to fund shovel-ready projects that will create jobs while meeting critical security needs.

Labor Department Announces $38 Million in Grants to Assist Workers in Michigan

The US Department of Labor today announced three National Emergency Grants totaling $38,033,600 to assist workers affected by documented layoffs from multiple companies in three defined regional economies throughout Michigan. These grants will provide flexibility to serve 2,161 workers currently displaced and those affected by future layoffs occurring within these regions during the grants' 12-month period of performance. Based on state of Michigan estimates, about 13,291 total workers ultimately will be served.

The first regional economy, known as Southeast Michigan, is comprised of Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne (including the city of Detroit) counties. The second regional economy, known as Mid-Michigan, is comprised of Bay, Clinton, Eaton, Genesee (including the city of Flint), Huron, Ingham, Lapeer, Midland, Saginaw, Sanilac, Shiawassee and Tuscola counties. The final region, known as West Michigan, is comprised of Allegan, Berrien, Cass, Kent (including the city of Grand Rapids), Muskegon, Oceana, Ottawa and Van Buren counties.

Michigan Awarded Nearly $20 Million in Stimulus Funds for Energy Efficiency Programs

Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced that more than $354 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is being awarded to 22 states, including Michigan, to support energy efficiency and conservation activities.

Under the Department of Energy's Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, these states will implement programs that lower energy use, reduce carbon pollution and create green jobs locally.

Michigan will use its $19.6 million EECBG funds to substantially improve energy efficiency, which is a centerpiece of the state's plan to transform its economy. Specifically, this funding will be used to support programs that will contribute to meeting the state's aggressive goal to... Read more
