A Monster member asks: My boss is doing some unethical things. People around me seem to know, but no one is saying anything. I can't go to the president, because he is my boss's brother.

It has taken me a really long time to find this great HR job, and I don't want to leave. But things are getting very uncomfortable. Any suggestions?

What the Expert says: You say everyone around you knows what's going on. That might be a good thing. There may be safety in numbers. Ask your coworkers to meet somewhere offsite to discuss the situation at hand. They are probably also feeling very uncomfortable about your boss's behavior.

    Power in Numbers

See if, as a group, you can approach another senior manager who appears to have the president's ear. But before you do this, make sure you have all your facts in order. Bring along any documentation you may have, so you can present the cold, hard facts. Make sure you tell the senior manager how uncomfortable you all feel about this. He will probably tell you not be concerned about your jobs, but recognize he has limited power in the organization.

Are You Really Where You Want to Be?

I understand it has taken you a long time to find this wonderful HR job, but is it really wonderful given the situation with your boss? Whatever your ally in management can accomplish, your boss is probably not going to disappear overnight. You will have to continue dealing with him on a daily basis until he does. And things could get worse. Your boss may actually ask you to do something in conflict with your own code of ethics.

Be sure you are prepared for a job search. Of course, you might decide to ride this thing out -- at least for a while. But chances are you'll eventually be looking for a new job, especially if word gets out you were the one who rallied the troops. Remember, there are a lot of wonderful HR opportunities out there that don't require you to sell your soul to the devil.
